Acupuncture,
a science which arose and developed in China over many thousands of
years, belongs to Traditional Chinese Medicine and reached Sweden in the
1960s.
The word acupuncture arose at the end of the 1700th
century when the method came to
Europa with Jesuit missionaries. It originates from the
Latin words acus (needle) and pungere (to stick). The
orginal Chinese name, Chen Chin, means sticking and burning and
the translation from the Chinese is ”acu moxa therapi”.
The purpose of acupuncture treatment is to influence the
flow of energy in the body by
sticking needles into the skin at special acupuncture
points. The disposable needles
used are very thin, of stainless steele and sterile. The
patient can feel just a little stick, less
than a bloodtest.
There are more than a thousand acupuncture points in the
body and every point has its
own special function. Different combinations of points
are used for different illnesses. It is
important to make a diagnosis before starting the
treatment as every person and every
illness is unique. The diagnosis is also the basis of the
decision as to wether acupuncture is suitable method of threatment for
the patient or not and the number of treatments needed to get a good
result.
